KaeLyn's exchange with Mayor Duffy regarding recent hate crime

Dear Mayor Duffy,

I am truly appalled at the way the City of Rochester has dealt with the alleged hate crime last Friday, June 1st. The news coverage has been minimal and it seems from what little information is available that the hate crime was motivated by the attackers' homophobia.

March and Rally Against Hate Crimes and Police Brutality

Concerned citizens of the Greater Rochester Area invite you to join us for a March and Awareness Rally against Hate Crimes and Police Brutality on Tuesday, June 26, 2007, 4:30 – 6:30 pm, at the four corners of Monroe Avenue and South Goodman Street.

The immediate impetus for march/rally occurred in the early morning of Friday, June 1, 2007, when eight GLBTQIA individuals were verbally and physically assaulted on South Goodman Street between Park and Monroe Avenues in homophobia-related crimes.

ANOTHER INCONVENIENT TRUTH: The Tragedy at Virginia Tech

ANOTHER INCONVENIENT TRUTH

The tragedy at Virginia Tech on April 16th, 2007 is no doubt on many of our minds. We struggle with the impossible task of trying to understand how such a horrific act of violence could occur on a beautiful, thriving college campus. Some of us have to try to explain this to our young children. We turn to the media for information, for facts, evidence, and perhaps, an explanation for something that is so difficult for us to comprehend.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
