Gender in the Making: Southern Rock and Calcutta's Slums

Two talks examining the construction and reproduction of gender in specific contexts. In "Rebel Masculinity" Jason Eastman examines how Southern rock bands produce an image of masculinity and how fans internalize this image. Niharika Banerjea examines how Calcutta non-profits paradoxically reproduce highly stereotyped images of women that undermine their own goals.

Many intersexuals are marginalized by groups which speak for them.

The New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the largest Irish parade held in the United States annually. Since the 1990s, Irish & Irish American Lesbian, Gay, Bi & Trans folks have been barred from marching in the parade under our own banner. Why? Because the Ancient Order of Hibernians decided that the parade was a Catholic parade in order to shut out Queers (and have a history of barring other groups that do not fit their political agenda such as women, people of color and people that use wheelchairs). The parade is billed as a private event, but how can this parade of bigotry be “private” when it marches down public streets and uses public funds?

Recent public relations scoops on these celebrities are a cameo study for both reverse racism and reverse sexism in America. To the point—Paris Hilton has been accused of being a “slut” in no uncertain terms (and been gossiped about regarding troubles of sorts like lawsuits); for amongst other things, because of a commercial she did with her body writhing in provocative and or touching ways. So exactly “who” is it that calls Hilton a slut in newspapers (and who are the people who readily accept this labeling)? But more importantly what are their “motives” for doing so?
