Poverty and Violence: Assault on Human Rights – Workshop/Conference Friday 10/17

Submitted by Paul on Wed, 2008-10-15 12:22

Disappeared Since 2000, Rochester ranked 11th in the entire U.S. for childhood poverty rates and, more recently, first in New York State. In 2005, Rochester was “Murder Capital” of New York State on per capital basis with 54 homicides. Somehow, the self evident connection between these reports is all but lost in our public discourse and the city’s response to crime in Rochester.

Indy TV #13 Rebecca Newberry on Queer Politics and GAGV Projects

This week on Indy TV Rebecca Newberry, special projects coordinator from Gay Alliance of Genesee Valley (GAGV), joins us. She discusses two of special projects that GAGV has taken on, Campus Out and a Queer Homeless/ Runaway documentation project, as well as many other issues.

On the use of the word "queer" Rebecca explains: " For older folks in the LGBT community the word "queer" stimulates this really uncomfortable negative response, because it was a hate directed word and it is a word that is used to insult, to hurt members of the LGBT community. However, its really been reclaimed over the past ten years or so by youth, in a way thats an umbrella term to describe different orientations, different identities in a way that's inclusive. So we joke about always adding more letters to this LGBT…A…I thing, now we're, young people, are starting to use, the word queer to be all inclusive and not have to spell everything out all the time."

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
