The importance of unconventional actions

Four years ago, between 500,000 and 800,000 people mobilized in New York City to protest the Republican National Convention. This year during the last week of August, and the first week of September, the 2008 Democratic and Republican Conventions will meet again, and like four years ago, will be opposed.

This year, anti-authoritarian groups are organizing under the name “Unconventional Action” to nationally mobilize direct action during the DNC in Denver and the RNC in St. Paul.

Queer Radical Reading Group 6/1

This Sunday, June 1, our next meeting for the queer radical reading group will meet. Now instead of giving you the location I will give you a discussion of sorts that you must interpret in order to figure out the possible locations and time. It's a critical scavenger hunt for those who wish to partake.

Radical Reading Group 5/18

This Sunday May, 18th at 5pm will be the next meeting of the Queer Radical Reading Group. The essay is "Gender: For a Marxist Dictionary" by Donna Haraway. The essay is from the book "Simians, Cyborgs, and Women".

Radical is about different ideas coming together so that we can better understand our world. My way of understanding things comes in conflict with your way of understanding things. By discussing and working through our differences we can change how we see the world and then use that understanding to change our actions.

Queer Radical Reading Group April 20th

For those who could not attend the first meeting, there is exciting news. You have until this Sunday April 20th at 5pm to find a copy of Jeanette Winterson's "Written on the Body" and read some portion of it.

I realize that this could be the most perilous of tasks. If you see your radical peers eyeing the book sitting so isolated among its heterosexual counterparts on the library shelves, do not use force. Peaceful solidarity is key. Say, hello queer friend, I realize that we both desire that book, but why don't we think of a way of dealing with this dilemma co-operatively.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
