New York State has been tricked into the forefront of the "anti-smoking" campaign. Since the state is home to Wall Street, this is not surprising. If honest science and medicine ever entered the picture, a just resolution of the smoking and health problem would devastate some of the most health-damaging, environmentally-destructive firms on Wall Street...INCLUDING Big Cig. Yes, Pataki & Bloomberg serve the cig makers.
Rochester NY - Sunday, May 30, 2004 The events surrounding the European Union and Latin American summit were outlined in an Associated Press news story and run in the local Gannett owned Democrat & Chronicle. The article mainly focused on the international tit-for-tat between participants from both, the EU and certain Latin American countries; with only a blurb-like paragraph on the anti-globalization protestors at the gates
We will resist the DNC with all of our might. We will make the delegates realize we do not want them in our fair city. We will refuse to recognize the State and we will continue to fight against the crook that is nominated. We will not ask for freedom, we will demand it.
How would the world be different if the President of the United States was a Green at the time of 9/11?
Long time community organizer and political activist Mark Dunlea of Poestenkill, New York will be giving a reading from his debut novel, Madame President: The Unauthorized Biography of the First Green Party President on Monday, June 14th at 179 Atlantic Avenue. The reading will begin at 7pm.
"Kohl's sources its clothing from such places as Burma (aka "Myanmar"), where teenage girls receive 4 cents/hr in sweatshop factories jointly owned by the Burmese military. Workers at Kohls' subcontractor, Chentex, in Nicaragua's Las Mercedes Free Trade Zone, get paid just 30 cents per hour for twelve hour shifts six days a week and only 20 cents for every pair of jeans that has a final border customs value of $7.14. Nicaraguan workers sewing jeans for Kohl's are paid $65 a month and live in "utter misery,'' Kernaghan said. He said many work as many as 50 hours overtime, added to the 47.5 hours week.
Las Mercedes Free Trade Zone is the largest FTZ in Nicaragua. It is made up of 15 enterprises that employ approximately 20,000 workers. Large US retailers, like Wal-Mart, Kohl's, J.C. Penney, Target, Sears and Gap, contract production to factories in the Las Mercedes Free Trade Zone."
We don't want this in our city, do we? Yes, there are plenty of stores in Rochester who support sweatshops, but this one hasn't opened yet, and we should try to prevent it from opening, or at least let people shopping there know where their products are coming from. So email if you are interested in helping flyering or maybe even protesting; I am not sure when the opening day of the store is, but if you want to you can email me or IM me with your name, and number or email address, and i will email you back with info. Thanks.
*PS. I'd appreciate it if someone would help me with this, I've never organized a protest or anything like it before.*
GREAT BARRINGTON, MA- Deep in the Berkshire Mountains, out at the end of a dirt track, a strange call boomed. It was unlike any bird, frog or mammal ever heard. It was the call of the once rare, and now swiftly becoming plentiful, indymedia devotee. Odd the call was, something like a thunderous cross between a red tail and a member of the Mohawk tribe from way back (with just a twinge of the Boston brogue) and a steady beat. It sounded so distinct and so much more advanced than anything like an elephant or a donkey that one could forget that these animals ever existed, if it weren’t for the gathering’s focus on the upcoming Democratic and Republican National Conventions.
More than seventy representatives of labor unions, human service organizations, faith-based and other advocacy organizations joined forces today with “Ghostbusters†at the State Capitol to demand the State Legislature bust corporate tax ghosts by closing corporate tax loopholes — which cost New York State more than $1 billion annually.
A Public Hearing organized by Monroe County Democrats was held at the Monroe County Legislature Chambers on Thursday, June 3, 2004 to listen public comments on the proposed Renaissance Center/Bus Terminal at Main & Clinton; about 35 persons spoke against the current Brooks/RGRTA plans and maybe 3 people spoke for the plans including one construction union member.
Feds STILL unable to distinguish art from bioterrorism
Grand jury to convene June 15
HELP URGENTLY NEEDED - SEE BELOW
Three artists have been served subpoenas to appear before a federal grand jury that will consider bioterrorism charges against a university professor whose art involves the use of simple biology equipment.
The subpoenas are the latest installment in a bizarre investigation in which members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force have mistaken an art project for a biological weapons laboratory (see end for background). While most observers have assumed that the Task Force would realize the absurd error of its initial investigation of Steve Kurtz, the subpoenas indicate that the feds have instead chosen to press their "case" against the baffled professor.
Rome Celli, former treasurer of the Green Party of Monroe County (GPoMC), was elected to the Brighton Central School District Board of Education in May of this year. By winning he became the first Green to win office in Monroe County history.
Four hundred people die a year in an undeclared war fought between US border patrol and Mexicans seeking relief from unremitting, unbearable poverty. Ruben Garcia, director of Annunciation House, a shelter for undocumented people, spoke about his experiences with the most marginalized group "in America".
