My Position On Rochester School Closings
While "leaders" of the City and School District play pass the buck (literally) --- significant and growing numbers of our children continue to represent the dependable fuel that feeds expansion of the prison-industrial-complex. The days of closing schools and funneling big-bucks to construction magnates to build, on the one hand, tax-money-generating condominiums for the well-to-do and super-rich, and on the other hand --- barbed-wire warehouses for our youth --- must be brought to a halt!

Featured speakers are Shujaa Graham, a former inmate on California’s death row, exonerated and released in 1981; and Anthony Arnove, editor of Iraq Under Siege (Haymarket/Pluto) and co-editor with Howard Zinn of Voices of a People’s History of the United States (Seven Stories Press).
Poor People United, Emergency Warming Station kicks off !
It has been a long wait to see this project underway. Throughout the process of planning and building, there have been delays, lack of funding, few volunteers, legal obstacles, etc. I am amazed that we have completed at all. Our first night was last Monday. I was so worried that our homeless guests would not stay. Is the heating adequate? Do we have enough blankets? What will we do with no bathroom on the bus? Questions like these worried me as we drove out to our overnight location. As the night progressed, I realized that many of those fears did not materialize.

President Bush signed order to allow torture, says ACLU
A document released for the first time today by the American Civil Liberties Union suggests that President Bush issued an Executive Order authorizing the use of inhumane interrogation methods against detainees in Iraq. Also released by the ACLU today are a slew of other records including a December 2003 FBI e-mail that characterizes methods used by the Defense Department as "torture" and a June 2004 "Urgent Report" to the Director of the FBI that raises concerns that abuse of detainees is being covered up.
