When Resistance is Right: A Panel on War Resistance
Saturday June 4, 2005; 4pm
First Unitarian Church,
220 S. Winton St
Victor Paredes is the brother of Pablo Paredes, a Navy enlisted sailor who refused to deploy with his Iraq-bound troop ship in December 2004 because of his opposition to the war. Victor has been touring the country speaking for his brother, who recently faced court martial for his act of resistance. In a major, unprecedented victory, the Navy judge refused to send Pablo Paredes to jail, finding instead that any service member has reasonable cause to believe that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were illegal.

The end of The Jason Crane Show
Effective immediately, The Jason Crane Show will no longer air on NewsTalk 950 WROC.
The Jason Crane Show was all about real progress. We focused every week on doing the hard work that it takes to make any kind of change. My heartfelt thanks to all of you who wrote and called to suggest topics, to support the show, and to suggest improvements. I'd also like to thank the panelists and guests who came on the show to inspire us with their vision of a better world.
Antiwar Activist Harassed by Police and Security at East High School
Yesterday four members of RAW (Rochester Against War) went to East High School to hand out flyers and talk to students about the lies they are being told by the military recruiters at their school. When a recruiter in full dress uniform, who was outside strutting around the students, saw them on the sidewalk handing out flyers he told the highschool security guards to go out and remove them.
Critical Mass Ride April 29th
April 29th, A Critical Mass ride will take place. Details:
5:30 Entire ride will leave from University of Rochester (the clocktower outside Wilson Commons)
Ride to the Liberty Pole, Downtown. "Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road. The idea started in San Francisco in September 1992 and quickly spread to cities all over the world. Critical Mass has no leaders, and no central organization licenses rides. In every city that has a CM ride, some locals simply picked a date, time, and location for the ride and publicized it, and thus the ride was born. CM is an idea and an event, not an organization."—criticalmassrides.info

Cost of Iraq War hitting right here at home
Cost of Iraq War hitting right here at home
Everyone knows that aircraft carriers, tanks, helicopters and other killing apparatus cost, and keep costing, the federal taxpayers billions of dollars in taxes. What is much less appreciated is that those weapons of war soak up federal aid to municipalities as well, impacting state and local taxes, keeping real wages low, and by skewing spending priorities, reduce the quality of life and extract money from every Rochester resident’s pocketbook and purse.
Democracy Now! Committee Shifts Strategy
Norm Silverstein hangs up on Metro Justice.
You might have seen the letter that WXXI is sending to community members who have asked WXXI to try Democracy Now! In the letter they say that the WXXI Community Advisory Board has reviewed Democracy Now! and concluded that Democracy Now! is biased. When we look at the minutes of the May 12th Community Advisory Board meeting, it’s no wonder that they reached this conclusion. According to minutes, WXXI Vice President Jeanne Fisher, stated that Democracy Now! is “anti-republican†and that Democracy Now! “admits that host Amy Goodman has a political agenda and that the content of the program is driven by her agenda,†and that Amy Goodman “is not able to fairly present all sides of an issue and is driving the content because of a right or left political bias.†Ms. Fisher also said “Amy Goodman was recently arrested in an anti-war protest in front of the White House for participating in the demonstration.â€
A Report To The Community
