An anarchist celebration of May Day

A history of the Chicago events

Source: http://flag.blackened.net/revolt/about/mayday.html

Not many people know why May Day became International Workers Day and why we should still celebrate it. It all began over a century ago when the American Federation of Labour adopted an historic resolution which asserted that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1st, 1886".

In the months prior to this date workers in there thousands were drawn into the struggle for the shorter day.

My Short Time in Jail

Last night I had my first encounter with the inside of a holding cell.

I was whisked away from the protest marking the 5th anniversary of the War in Iraq by a police man who undoubtedly arrested me for the sole purpose of scaring the crowd back onto the streets. At first I didn’t realize what had happened. I was one of the people who wasn’t supposed to get arrested. I hadn’t lain down in the streets or spray painted any circled A’s on the IRS building.

Please, step off the curb! (Some thoughts on last weekend's RAW meeting)

So the Rochester Against War (RAW) meeting wasn’t too bad this past Saturday. (I’ve gotten really frustrated and left a few times before.) It felt like a lot of people wanted workshops around knowing their rights and civil disobedience. (Of course it took a good hour to get to that discussion and then it was only about a half an hour long with at least one proposal to put off the discussion till the following week; I wasn’t having that.) Speaking of which, RAW will be hosting a longer discussion on civil disobedience and direct action this Saturday, April 5th, at noon.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
