Five People Arrested on Naval Base Kitsap- Bangor

There have been approximately 100 Plowshares Nuclear Resistance
Actions worldwide since 1980. Plowshares actions are taken from Isaiah
2:4 in Old Testament (Hebrew) scripture of the Christian Bible, ³God
will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many
people. And they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their
spears into pruning hooks. And nations will not take up swords against
nations, nor will they train for war anymore."

Pro-Peace, Pro Israel lobbying Group Rapps Up Conference

JStreet which bills itself as a pro-peace, pro-Israel lobbying group that is trying to challenge the entrenched power of the very militant and right wing American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) rapped up its first annual conference and it was a booming success. JStreet is pushing the US to pressure Israel to agree to a two state solution. The organizers of this conference were expecting 1,000 to attend but 1,500 attended instead.

Press Release: SDS to Postpone Meeting with Mayor Duffy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

*****Please forward widely*****

On October 13th at 12:30pm, Mayor Bob Duffy agreed to meet with Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) this coming Friday, October 16th. Duffy has since changed the terms of this meeting from SDS meeting with the mayor alone to SDS meeting with officials of the RPD and its lawyers. Therefore, we are postponing this meeting while we seek legal council.

Please note: these changes in meeting terms came without the notification of SDS; we had to obtain this information independently.

Vietnam raids monastery, evicts monks

Bat Nha was the fastest-growing and most radical monastery in Vietnam. It was completely destroyed last week by a mob while uniformed police blocked off all roads of access. They violently evicted the monks living there, followers of Thich Nhat Hanh.

A leaked memo from a communist party official blatantly contradicts the Vietnamese Government’s claim that they have nothing to do with the oppression of the Bat Nha monks and nuns (sound familiar, Rochester?)

Afghanistan 101

A series of estimates in the 1960s and early 1970s warned the Johnson and Nixon administrations that the South Vietnamese government was corrupt, that it would not be a strategic ally in the war against the North, and that the strategic bombing campaign would fail.

As philosopher George Santayana's wrote: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
