The neo liberal elite seize their opportunity to increase unemployment globally

The neo liberal elite seize upon an ideological shift at the UN to increase unemployment globally. The shift was from right (Bush) to left wing neo liberalism (Obama). The global elites were dealing with economic and social rights deciding not to provide protections for the independent peoples and the unemployed and failed to ensure that the latter groups would be able to help themselves.

Poverty in Rochester, NY

Poverty seems to have been swept under the rug this during the 08 election. While the crisis that is befalling the middle class is urgent, so too is the plight of the poor. With our economy in such dire straights the ranks of the poor will only swell. It behooves us to take a look at poverty here at home.

While many people look upon our fair city and see the glittering new buildings and the prosperity of one segment of our population, the inner city residential neighborhoods go unseen. Neighborhoods on the North East and North West portion of the city are in ruins.

Rally Against Budget Cuts 11/18....get on the bus!

RALLY AGAINST BUDGET CUTS at the STATE CAPITOL IN ALBANY!
Tuesday, November 18th, 2008.
Bus leaves from Rochester.

Sponsored by Metro Justice and Citizen Action of New York

-----

The financial crisis has hit New York State. On November 18th, the New York State Legislature will meet to decide how to close NYS's short-term $1.5 billion deficit.

In times when New York's neediest residents and working families are getting hit the hardest, we need a state government that will protect the programs we depend on.

Poverty and Violence: Assault on Human Rights – Workshop/Conference Friday 10/17

Since 2000, Rochester ranked 11th in the entire U.S. for childhood poverty rates and, more recently, first in New York State. In 2005, Rochester was “Murder Capital” of New York State on per capital basis with 54 homicides. Somehow, the self evident connection between these reports is all but lost in our public discourse and the city’s response to crime in Rochester. The upcoming Poverty and Violence: Assault on Human Rights conference on Friday, 10/17 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church on 141 Adams St. seeks to correct this. Seats are still available for three public talks this Friday.

Vogue’s Obscene Fashion Photos Spark Debate in India

By HEATHER TIMMONS

In Vogue India magazine, a child from a poor family modeled a Fendi bib, which costs about $100.

A man modeled a Burberry umbrella in Vogue that costs about $200. Some 456 million Indians live on less than $1.25 a day.
A family of three squeezes onto a motorbike for their daily commute, the mother riding without a helmet and sidesaddle in the traditional Indian way — except that she has a Hermès Birkin bag (usually more than $10,000, if you can find one) prominently displayed on her wrist.

Elsewhere, a toothless barefoot man holds a Burberry umbrella (about $200).

Rochester Walks for Peace Week 2: Firsthand Accounts

This Saturday about 35-40 activists walked from Norton st. and Clinton ave. to Cafe Underground Railroad on W. Main st. as part of the second out of four walks for Rochester Walks for Peace. The march slowly winded its way through the city, with walkers stopping frequently along the way to engage local residents.

The aim of the march was to forge connections between the Anti-war community and communities in the city. The march was truly inspiring and well received.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
