MBOoSPHC Last evening's Town Hall Meeting on Single Payer Health Care — "Medicare for All" — sponsored by Progressive Democrats of Genesee Valley and numerous other progressive groups should have been the lead story in every media outlet last night and today. I'm a nurse, not a journalist, but I can think of many stories that reporters should have been eager to capture:

Day of Action for Troy Davis

TAD On Tuesday, May 19, in solidarity with Amnesty International’s Global Day of Action for Troy Davis, Rochester’s Judicial Process Commission sponsored a noontime vigil on Exchange Street in front of the Hall of Justice. Approximately thirty people gathered with signs and t-shirts that denounce the inhumanity of the Death Penalty and call for justice for one Georgia Death Row prisoner in particular, Troy Davis.

AARM Holds Second Event on the Media and Racism

On Wednesday, April 22nd, Activists Against Racism Movement (AARM) held our second event focused on building an ongoing, working relationship between the community and members of the media. This event was part of our campaign to work together with media representatives to counter perpetuation and reinforcement of individual and institutionalized racism by mass-media. We want the media to become a more positive force that can help produce solutions for outstanding socioeconomic, political, and cultural issues and problems within our local, regional and national communities.

efBP Sister Luci Romero, introduced by Sodus Church Watch founder Dr. Lory Ghertner, discusses the current situation for the migrant community in Sodus. She describes intense police and Border Patrol repression and calls for ongoing solidarity from Anglo neighbors and supporters. Dr. Ghertner and Sister Lucy are very worried about increased Border Patrol activity, including the detention of farmworkers and their families this week.

Alexander: Food Lines Show Signs of National Depression

According to Reuters, “The previous record for food stamp enrollment was 31.6 million last September, which included “disaster” stamps for states hit by hurricanes and floods.” Today’s disaster, that has increased that number is the U.S. economy; even with the government bailouts totaling close to $3 trillion, the U.S. economy is in freefall and the lines for food stamps and unemployment benefits continue to climb.

Fair Share Reform Rally Draws Huge Crowd

A huge crowd came out to rally for the Fair Share Tax Reform plan at 5pm today at the Liberty Pole. The plan calls for raising taxes on New Yorkers who make over $250,000 to offset the projected state budget deficit of $15 billion dollars. The plan is an alternative to Governor Patterson's current proposal which includes a gigantic $9 billion of cuts to social services, education and health care. The rally was part of a series of rallies happening today in New York State.
