The H2A guest worker program can be seen as modern day slavery, in many ways.
Reasons for opposition to the H2A guest worker program
Guest worker programs in this country, including the H2A program,
allow employers to import low-wage employees with no workplace rights,
and then send them back when they're no longer needed.
H2A workers can only work for the employer that hired then under the
H2A guest worker program.
If H2A workers are subjected to unacceptable working conditions, they
can't quit and then go to work for someone else. They can't form a
union. They can be fired for any reason whatsoever. They can't vote.
They can either put up with anything their boss demands of them, or
be deported.
In a way, it's what every employer would like to have if they could:
a steady supply of employees willing to work long and hard for low wages
without complaint.
We need an immigration policy that gives all workers the same rights
and protections on the job, regardless of their immigration status and
no matter what industry they work in.
