President Obama Divides the Nation over His War with Libya

Primary tabs

The majority of Americans are tired of wars and the cost to fight these wars as the nation sinks deeper into a national recession. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have already cost $1 trillion and after one week in Libya, the cost is approaching $1 billion. When Americans are suffering cutbacks and layoffs, and 22 million Americans are out of work, the question is “Obama, where are the jobs?”

U.S. Socialist Stewart Alexander: Americans wants jobs and peace, not war

Within the past week, President Barack Obama has taken the American people into a third war by acting on the UN resolution to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya. President Obama’s decision to commit U.S. military forces to enforce the no-fly zone was done without the consent of Congress and has created great division within Congress and with the American People.

President Obama’s decision to go to war with Libya has caused one member of Congress to suggest impeachment; Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) saying Saturday’s U.S. missile attack on Libya should be considered an “impeachable offense.” To the contrary, Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) has stated that the president’s decision failed to go far enough. McCain says Gaddafi should be “tried for war crimes.”

U.S. Presidential Candidate Stewart Alexander says “President Obama has put the interest of big business and big oil before the interest of the nation he was elected to serve. It is not the responsibility of the president to enforce UN resolutions involving war without the consent of Congress; the president’s actions are in direct violation of the U.S. Constitution.”

Socialists nationwide and America’s political left have strongly condemned President’s Obama intrusion into the ongoing protests in Libya. In a statement issued by the Socialist Party USA, “We strongly condemn the use of violence by the authoritarian Gaddafi regime to prolong its inevitable collapse. We also strongly oppose any imperialist intrusion on the freedom or democratic rights of the Libyan people, both in the present and after Colonel Gaddafi is out of power.”

In the statement issued by the Green Party of the United States, “The Green Party has supported movements for democracy throughout the Middle East and Africa and their efforts to remove violently repressive and corrupt dictators like Muammar Gaddafi. But Green leaders insisted that the imposition of a no-fly zone by foreign attack is an illegitimate intervention in a civil war that Libyans have the right to resolve without interference from western powers for whom humanitarian claims have been cover for economic and geopolitical domination.”

Peace and Freedom Party’s statement on Libya reads: “People of North Africa and the Middle East can and must create their own democratic institutions. We oppose any intervention by the United States or European nations. History proves that despite rhetoric about human rights it would be done only in the interests of imperialism.”

Stewart Alexander says he does not feel that President Obama is in any danger of being impeached by this Congress. “This Congress will support war above all else to advance U.S. imperialism. Presently, 46 states are in debt, the nation has a $14.3 trillion deficit, the nation is making cutback in education and social services, and millions of seniors are living in poverty. More working people are receiving public assistance than during the Great Depression. Congress is debating more deficits and budget cutbacks; however, Congress will spare no expense to protect American interest; oil.”

In his online statement, Congressman Dennis Kucinich noted “The American people have had enough. First it was Afghanistan, then Iraq. Then bombs began to fall in Pakistan, then Yemen, and soon it seems bombs could be falling in Libya (the U.S. is now engaged in war with Libya). Our nation simply cannot afford another war, economically, diplomatically or spiritually.”

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
