Religion, Sex Education, and the Legislature A Discussion of The Healthy Teens Act Interfaith IMPACT of New York State Presents its Annual Legislative Briefing FEATURED SPEAKERS Rabbi Laurence Kotok, Temple B’rith Kodesh Jim Stewart, CEO/President Planned Parenthood Reverend John Wilkinson, Third Presbyterian Church Kim McLaughlin, Executive Director of NYS Student Support Services Center Sunday, March 22, 2009 2:00 p.m. First Universalist Church 150 S. Clinton Avenue #file_1# Free and Open to the Public For more information, call: 585.442.5111 Part of the IINYS Conscience in Public Life project funded in part by the Fund for Unitarian Universalist Social Responsibility The Healthy Teens Act will establish a grant program through the NYS Department of Health to provide age-appropriate, medically accurate sex education. Participation is optional for school districts. The Act has repeatedly passed the NYS Assembly by wide margins (A2856 in 2008) and new Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith confirmed that Senate passage of Healthy Teens Act is a priority for him this year. With six in 10 young people in New York State having sex before graduation and one in four teenage girls having a sexually transmitted infection, comprehensive sex education is the best solution to protecting young people’s health. Abstinence-only programs have been proven ineffective in delaying sexual activity or reducing teen pregnancy. Seventy-two percent of New Yorkers support the Healthy Teens Act.
