Patricia Smith, Acting NYS Labor Commissioner Chung-Wha Hong, Exec. Dir., NY Immigration Coalition The NYS minimum wage increased to $7.15/hr. on Jan.1, 2007. In the past, when the minimum wage increased, a majority of workers didn’t know that they were entitled to a raise and many employers ignored the law. But now, the NYS Labor Department has begun a public awareness campaign to educate low-income workers about their rights and businesses about the penalties breaking the law.The Department is also increasing enforcement by hiring more bilingual investigators.
