Enforcing the Minimum Wage Law

The NYS minimum wage increased to $7.15/hr. on Jan.1, 2007. In the past, when the minimum wage increased, a majority of workers didn’t know that they were entitled to a raise and many employers ignored the law. But now, the NYS Labor Department has begun a public awareness campaign to educate low-income workers about their rights and businesses about the penalties breaking the law.The Department is also increasing enforcement
by hiring more bilingual investigators. Also, random sweeps will be conducted in industries that traditionally employ immigrants and low-income workers to ensure they are being paid the
correct wages.
