Band of Rebels Targets Corporate Welfare Recepients
Primary tabs
Band of Rebels has joined forces with Metro Justice in targeting corporations who have received giveaways from taxpayers and paid little or no taxes. Few if any new jobs were actually created and those that were were done at considerably higher cost than that of paying the workers directly.
Band of Rebels is composed mostly of retirees. It was formed in August 2011 to call attention to banks that received taxpayer bailout money but continue to evict people from their homes. The group has staged actions at various banks around the county at noon on Mondays.
Metro Justice is a local community advocacy group for economic justice that was established in 1971.
Verizon was targeted because it received tax breaks and government handouts, while continuing to lay off workers. Staff in the local office shut off the "Open" sign and locked the door during the demonstration. Next Monday, February 27 the group plans a demonstration in front of Chase bank on Monroe and Goodman.
