Slavery in Today’s World

I recently watched a movie that I have seen a few times called “Amazing Grace”.
It is the story of one man’s passionate fight to abolish most of the slave trade in the British Empire.  William Wilberforce, after decades of persistent and sometimes agonizing campaigning, was successful in assuring passage of the Slavery Abolish Act of 1833.   Sadly, he died 3 days after hearing of Parliaments
commitment to this Act.   Many do not know he was also responsible for the formation of Britain’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.  

A Beach Outing for Environmental Activists

A mixed group of community activists gathered at Durand Beach Saturday afternoon to promote the use of clean renewable energy sources and denounce activities such as hydraulic fracturing (commonly known as “hydrofracking”).  The event, which was advertised as a protest against off-shore drilling was initially set up by the local activist group the Raging Grannies.  Though the Raging Grannies did not come out in large numbers, activists took part in a slightly different, international event called “Hands Across the Sand” which focused on more broad based environmental issues.

Metro Justice and Band of Rebels organized a rally in celebration of the 47th anniversary of Medicare that was held at the Monroe County building in Rochester, NY.  Participants were not only celebrating Medicare's anniversary, but advocating for expansion of Medicare for all, handing out information to those interested on the  issue and bringing attention to the fact that Maggie Brooks who is running against Louise Slaughter for Congress refuses to state her position on medicare and the Ryan budget.

Citizens concerned about police violence again took to the street to draw attention to recent incidents.  The march took place on the sidewalk; the city denied a permit.  At least one person was arrested for writing in chalk on pavement at City Hall.  The action was in response to the arrest of 18 peaceful protesters at a march on Saturday on East Ave, an unprovoked violent attack on a house party on Sunday and several arrests at the Puerto Rican Festival.

Non-disruptive Private Party Violently Broken Up by Police; At Least 12 Arrested

Rochester Police Department officers chased a 20 year-old into a house, broke down a door to get to him, maced him, and then beat the person in the face with a maglite until he was unconscious, as a non-disruptive private party was taking place, on the night of July 22, 2012.

A Demonstration of Demonstrations to Come: Another Look at Rochester’s Anti-Capitalist March

At first glance it looked like a re-emergence party for the local Occupy Rochester chapter Saturday evening when upwards of around 150 people took to the streets in an Anti-Capitalist March.  The march, not part of any Occupy event, started at Washington Square Park but demonstrators did not stay long and as a result marched through most of Rochester’s eastern downtown and Park Avenue areas.

At 9:00am, July 23, 2012, a press conference was held denouncing the Rochester Police Department's violent assault on a peaceful anti-capitalist march that was progessing through downtown and some east side neighborhoods where 18 people were arrested on Saturday evening, July 21.

Just came from the meeting at the Flying Squirrel, and am beginning this thread as a resource e-mail list for participants and supporters to receive information, and continue to come out in support of the folks who marched and were arrested at yesterdays anti-capitalist march.

From this meeting:

-- Everyone was finally released/bailed out by ~3pm.

-- A short press release was drafted by a few people who were there and who were arrested, describing the march and violent arrests, which will be sent out to various media outlets.

Update (7/22): Just a heads up--everyone who was in jail has been released. Arraignments are Monday, July 23, at 9:30am in Rochester City Court. A press conference will be held outside the Hall of Justice, 99 Exchange Blvd. at 9:00am Monday, July 22nd, before the arraignment of the 18 arrestees.

The Fraud that is Truthland

So I heard about this film Truthland which is purported as a response to GasLand by Josh Fox. While I think Gasland barely scratches the surface of the issue of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas extraction (hydrofracking or fracking) — and promotes the most sensational aspects — I think it is overall a service that it raises awareness and encourages people to explore further.

Tree-Sitters Halt Hydrofracking Operations

Activists from Marcellus Earth First! have erected a slash pile blockade and two tree sits blocking an access road to an EQT hydro-fracking site in Moshannon State Forest in Clearfield County, PA., halting drilling operations set to begin this week. The blockaders were joined by 40 supporters and concerned citizens, who turned around a Halliburton truck. The blockade is trying to stop the further destruction of Pennsylvania’s state forests—more than half of which have already been leased for drilling—and call attention to the devastating effects of hydrofracking on the state’s communities. The sitters’ anchor lines are blocking the road by crossing each other and the road, and if an anchor line is cut a sitter will fall. This action has been coordinated as the post-Rendezvous action. Each Summer Earth First!ers and allies come together to skill share, take part in discussion workshops, and keep it wild in our last remaining wilderness places in the US. Following a week in the woods, we take part in an action in support of the local organizers hosting the camp out, also know as the Round River Rendezvous, or Rondy.

Hey, I know landlords are supposed to be horrible people, just the scum of the earth. Paying rent sucks, doesn't it?

I'm a landlord, and I collect rent. When rent is late, I collect late fees. Business is business. I've been at it long enough, I know what a good tenant looks like, and I know when a tenant needs a break and when a tenant is a scammer.
