June 27: IWW meeting / Critical Mass / Emma Goldman's Birthday!

Do you know what June 27 represents?

June 27--tomorrow--represents the birthday of anarchist, feminist, labor organizer, free speech advocate, and Rochester, NY resident Emma Goldman!!!

Also, tomorrow is the birthday of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). The IWW contends that all workers should be united within a single union as a class and that the wage system should be abolished. They may be best known for the Wobbly Shop model of workplace democracy, in which workers elect recallable delegates, and other norms of grassroots democracy (self-management) are implemented.

Got side-swiped on my bike yesterday!

WHAT THE FUCK! So I was rolling down Monroe heading towards the city just past the intersection of Meigs when a white 4-door luxury sedan decided that the school bus in front of him wasn't going fast enough and therefore decided to roll up right next to me and allowed the side of his car to brush against the side of my rear basket before gunning it and speeding down Monroe into the city.

At the light before he side-swiped me he honked his horn as if to say get the hell off the street. I was along the shoulder, but not hugging it because of pot holes.

Free Bicycle Repair Collective Starting!

As some may know, there's been meetings going on every Tuesday for a new community meeting space that will be opening in Rochester. It will host Rochester Indymedia, as well as Food Not Bombs. We're hoping that people will feel compelled to start up new projects now that there will be a permanent space, and a neighborhood to base those projects in. Have you been dreaming up a wonderful idea, without certainty about where it could possibly happen?

There's a greatness to the Anti-War Crisis Center. A wonderful meeting space that has become a real hub for interesting activism.

The Adventures of Bikepooling!

Adam Durand is a bike commuter, filmmaker, and animal rights activist. Caitlin Holcombe is a bike commuter, craftmaker, and human rights activist. Together they form a bike commuting duo! They collaborated on this essay about their adventures in bikepooling. [Special thanks to Adam, Caitlin, and RocBike.com (“The single greatest achievement on the inner tubes!”) for allowing us to publish this piece. Ed.]

A few weeks ago, we were working together on a gender awareness workshop for Beyond the Binary.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
