Justice for our sister Marcella Sali Grace! Fellow Indymedia Companera

Version en espanol sigue

Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca.
Thursday, September 25

Justice for our sister Marcella Sali Grace!

Brother and sisters,

Our hearts are full of sadness and rage because our sister Sali was brutally raped and murdered 20 minutes from San Jose del Pacifico and up to this moment the Oaxacan Attorney General's Office, as is its custom, is not doing anything regarding the fact that there exist witnesses who have information to identify those responsible.

Indy TV #7 Human Trafficking in the Context of Immigrant Rights

In the early days of Capitalism, Slaves were a large part of the agricultural work force in the United States. We're often led to believe, in our history courses, that slavery is an aberration contained in the past. However, slavery has continued to exist right up through US History and into the present day. Of course we now have different names and arrangements for Slavery. Sweat Shops, Prison Labor, and Human Trafficking are some of these new arrangements.

This week, on Indy TV, Owen Thompson and Renan Salgado, farm worker advocates with Farmworker Legal services of New York, discuss the dynamics of Human Trafficking as it pertains agricultural labor market and immigration policy in the United States.

Thompson explains the specifics of Trafficking: "As it tends to be used in today's context, Human Trafficking is a synonym for Modern Day Slavery and there's a lot of truth in that. But to get more specific, to get into the legal definition of what trafficking is: Human Trafficking is about using force, fraud or coercion, for example threats of force, to make someone perform labor for you. So they can get paid for it, and in that sense its important to distinguish: is it slavery or is it not slavery has become a lot more complicated in modern times."

Border Patrol boarding buses far from borders

‘I mean you’re hunting – you’re catching criminal aliens, and when you catch someone like that, boy, it feels awfully good.’ – Border Patrol agent

The authors of this article, Caroline Kim and Jenna Loyd, are members of the Syracuse-based Detainment Task Force. This report is based on the investigative work of this group. They are monitoring the work on “inland” Border Patrol agents who have recently been boarding buses around Syracuse and Rochester – quite far from any border.

The United States, Europe and Human Rights

The discredited way in which the European Union suspended its sanctions on Cuba on June 19 has been reported in 16 international press dispatches… Such hypocrisy is made all the more evident by the brutal European measure to expel illegal immigrants from Latin American countries.

American Harvest: a superficial, patronizing, and smug film

What I sent to The Little Theatre after they responded to my brief online message that the film was deeply flawed:

Thanks for your reply. My husband and I have long been supporters of The Little and it is, indeed, our first choice for any film. I recommend it to my students and friends as well.

That's one of the reasons why I cared enough to send email about the film — it appears that a personal connection with the film-maker clouds the generally good assessment of films selected. I don't need to agree with films I see, but they should at least be professionally produced and edited.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
