May Day 2010 Sparks New Collaborations

May Day in Rochester this year saw a coming together of dozens of groups for the planning a participation of a Celebration of Worker's History. Julie Shmidke, an organizer from Next Generation United opened the festivities by explaining the History of May day:

"Today is the day the world celebrates the struggle of workers who won the 8 hour work day. Its a Holiday that started here in America and is celebrated all over the world, except for in America. They took it away from us years ago because it was too scary and too dangerous and we asked too many questions. The last few years in cities around the country workers have been fighting to bring it back, for Immigration Reform, for workers rights, for all the things that we fight for to make our lives better"

This 8 minute video features short snip-its of the speeches, chants and signs from Saturday.

Film from Chile Has Lessons for Americans

The Rochester Labor Council hosted The Maid at the Dryden Theater March 26. The film was produced in Chile, directed by Sebastian Silva. It looks at the plight of domestic workers through the starring character Racquel. Racquel has worked for the same family of university professors for 20 years as a maid, cook and nanny for their four children. The story is set in Santiago, Chile but could just as well have taken place in Los Angeles, Miami or Rochester.

Silva looks into the difficulty of life for domestic workers. They are often isolated from their families.

Barefoot Host Dawn Zuppelli Detained at Canadian Border

Rochester Indymedia journalist, Dawn Zuppelli, was interrogated and detained for over an hour by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) on her way to cover protests at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC. Upon arriving at customs at the Vancouver International Airport, she and her colleague Ted Forsyth, also with Rochester Indymedia, were asked the obligatory questions as to why they were coming to Vancouver. Zuppelli was tagged for further interrogation and funneled off to a check point area sometime around 12:05AM on February 10. She was released sometime around 1:15AM.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
