Journalist

During a recent visit to several university campuses in the U.S., I discovered that there is more sympathy for Hamas there than there is in Ramallah.

Listening to some students and professors on these campuses, for a moment I thought I was sitting opposite a Hamas spokesman or a would-be-suicide bomber.

Medical and humanitarian mission to Gaza reportback (plus interview)

Submitted by ben on Mon, 2009-03-09 23:50

As soon as I entered the Unitarian Church on Thursday I was told they needed more chairs. I brought the chairs to the room where Dr. Ismail Mehr was presenting on his experience with the Islamic Medical Association of North America, which was overflowing with about 75 people. I took a seat at the doorway and watched him speak.

To All Who Participated in AARM's Racism and the Media Community Discussion: Thank You!

I am writing as a member of Activists Against Racism Movement's Leadership Team. Our organization spear-headed the event. Our goals were to begin a dialogue concerning ways in which mainstream, mass-media currently reinforces and perpetuates racism, as well as their role and responsibility in helping to address individual and institutionalized racism. The community conversation was a great success on all fronts. I could write pages about the event, but, for now, I just want to say one huge thank you to all the people that made it a success.

Attending the annual ESL meeting

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Hi all, just shooting you a quick update on the ESL annual meeting.
It appears as if ESL had some warning that I might be coming. When I arrived
at 2pm, I was told the meeting was changed to 4pm.In an unprecendented
move, when I returned at 4:05pm I was delayed in the lobby while the
receptionist checked to see if the meeting was still happening. After making
two mysterious calls she waved me through only to have me led to a room
where the meeting was adjourned as I was approaching the room.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
