ROCHESTER JOINS NATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST TO STOP CORPORATE BAILOUT

ROCHESTER, NY – Rochester-area taxpayers will participate in a call for a national day of protest scheduled for this Thursday, Sept. 25, in opposition to the no-strings-attached, $700 billion corporate bailout plan advanced by President Bush and Treasury Secretary Paulson.

The protest will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in front of the Federal Building at 100 State St.

“We are being asked to reward a bankrupt ideology that has viewed government regulation as evil despite the fact that both our history and current events demonstrate that these regulations are both necessary and critical ” said organizer Kathy Castania. It is difficult to trust an administration that in the past pushed through the Patriot Act and an illegal preemptive invasion and occupation of Iraq by manipulating fear as a result of a terrorist attack. Again they are hijacking a catastrophe and offering only one solution – for the taxpayers to fork over $700 billion – with no oversight, no accountability, no transparency, no nothing — to the very people and institutions who got us into this mess in the first place. Our children and grandchildren deserve better than this.”

The national day of protest features dozens of press conferences, demonstrations and other public events throughout the United States. Some are being organized by local and national organizations while others, such as the one in Rochester, will be a self-organized event involving individual taxpayers angered by the proposed corporate bailout.

FIGHT THE WALL STREET ADDICTION FRAUD AND “RESCUE” TRAP! TIME FOR REAL SOCIALIST CHANGE!

The new Paulsen-Bernanke package to “rescue” Wall Street will only puff the speculative bubble and trap the working people’s money in it. It hopes to keep the addiction, greed and gluttony for speculative profits going. It’s time to beat down Wall Street capitalism! Time to put working people’s welfare first! Time for real, socialist change.

Rochester Walks for Peace Week 3

The third week of Rochester Walks for Peace made it's way through the city this Saturday, walking the entire length of Hudson Avenue from North to Titus. Irondequoit United Church of Christ sponsored the walk and provided space, food and refreshments to walkers at the end.

One noticeable difference this week was that people passing us by were much more eager to support the walkers by honking in support, waving and stopping their cars to get our flyers.

Rochester Walks for Peace Week 2: Firsthand Accounts

This Saturday about 35-40 activists walked from Norton st. and Clinton ave. to Cafe Underground Railroad on W. Main st. as part of the second out of four walks for Rochester Walks for Peace. The march slowly winded its way through the city, with walkers stopping frequently along the way to engage local residents.

The aim of the march was to forge connections between the Anti-war community and communities in the city. The march was truly inspiring and well received.

Fight to Remove Bob Lonsberry Continues - Join Us

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sun, 2008-07-13 21:38

Last night, a group of activists appalled by Bob Lonsberry's most recent racist, classist, and sexist remarks, met again to discuss how to get Bob Lonsberry off the air once and for all (previous story on Lonsberry). We've been listening to his show for a week now and have a list of approximately 100 of the sponsors aired on his show.

Working people relying on stimulus checks, coins and lotto

The platforms of the Socialist Party USA and Peace and Freedom Party outline fundamental approaches that will promote economic policy that will benefit working people. Both socialist parties are rejecting the economic strategies of the Democrats, Republicans, and their candidates; advancing U.S. imperialism and waging war is not the answer for our economy that is now in economic free fall.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
