Rochester Freedom School Students Learning Earthen Architecture

The Freedom School, located at 630 N. Goodman St., is working to provide education that's centered in it's community and meaningful to urban youth. As part of the summar camp program, students are learning to build houses using earthen achitecture, called Eco-domes.

Right now, students are building a 2-person emergency shelter, which are set up in disaster areas. Later the students will work to build a full-sized house using the same process. I talked with George Moses, the director of the Freedom School, about the project, it's goals and the larger vision of the Freedom School.

Israel running out of water

Israel’s usable water supply is at an all-time low.

Water levels are down owing to four straight years of drought, precipitation is inadequate, and private consumption is increasing. Quotas for farmers and water rationing for Israelis has already begun in the north and the Sea of Galilee may soon stop pumping.

According to the UN water index, the minimum quantity of water each person needs is 79,200 gallons per year. Israel’s water sources can supply only 31,680 gallons per person per year, a scant 40% of the UN minimum. Israel can’t survive without water, the essence of life.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
