"You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph." ; i.e. death by asphyxiation or asthma, a chronic disease (affliction) characterized by progressive calcification of the lungs. Film from Chile Has Lessons for Americans

The Rochester Labor Council hosted The Maid at the Dryden Theater March 26. The film was produced in Chile, directed by Sebastian Silva. It looks at the plight of domestic workers through the starring character Racquel. Racquel has worked for the same family of university professors for 20 years as a maid, cook and nanny for their four children. The story is set in Santiago, Chile but could just as well have taken place in Los Angeles, Miami or Rochester.

Silva looks into the difficulty of life for domestic workers. They are often isolated from their families.

The Reality Tour

The city of Rochester, New York Rochester is the 11th worst city in the country in terms of child poverty and fact, Rochester’s Latino child poverty rate is the sixth highest in the nation. As is the case in many cities, poor families in Rochester have been adversely affected by increasing lay-offs and county budget cuts in the area of social services.

The Rochester Chapter of the Social Welfare Action Alliance in coalition with poor people, advocates, and human service workers, have joined together to operationalize a Reality Tour. This 3-hour event takes riders on a tour of blighted areas, a the abandoned subway, the welfare department on St. Paul, House of Mercy, St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center/Health Center, and a vacant lot next to the House of Mercy. The tour has also made other symbolic “tour stops” which emphasize where the community’s spending priorities seem to be (soccer stadiums, prison expansion, etc.).

Supercomputer Hacking No More!

If you've had problems with email or interaction with certain websites, that may be a sign that you've mentioned or attempted to contact people or sites that have been classified as "taboo" by the Nazis that rule the Internet. These Nazis have professed invincible offspring of the Devil manning supercomputers in order to block, intercept, and/or steal your communications, and they are prepared to keep it up indefinitely. More often than not, it is E-murder by creating fatal communication glitches. 1/29 The toll of the Bush Nazi breast cancer scam.

Health Care Discussion Follows Documentary Screening

Members of the Universal Health Care advocacy group Rochester for HR 676 met at the Cinema Theater Monday December 7 for a showing of Michael Moore's 2007 documentary Sicko followed by discussion. About 50 people attended. Despite the election of President Obama and Democrats to Congress, little has been done to address health care problems. There are several proposals in Congress but they range from too little too late to worse than nothing. One bill, originally introduced by Rep John Conyers (D-MI), HR 676 would simply extend Medicare to all Americans.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
