TALKS STALL AT UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER AND STRONG HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES MAY PICKET NEXT WEEK

(Rochester)--Contract talks involving over twelve hundred
University of Rochester employees broke off earlier this week with no
agreement in sight. Negotiations between two organized groups and the
University began in September. Contracts covering one thousand employees
of Strong Memorial Hospital and another two hundred employees of the
University of Rochester's non-medical divisions expired on October 2. The
contracts were extended through October 30 with the hope that new
agreements could be reached by that time.

McReynols for Senate Labor Day Statement

David McReynolds, the Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate, called today for: an increase in the minimum wage to $10 an hour; a constitutional amendment to guarantee a living wage job; strengthening of workers' rights,, including the right to unionize, starting with a repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act; a reduction in the work week to 32 hours; increase government support for employee ownership; enactment of a single-payer universal health care system; extending federal labor laws to protect farmworkers; and, mandatory six week vacations for all workers.
