J29: Day of Action Against Gap and Walmart
Primary tabs
On June 29th, students, workers and community members in more than 35 cities across the world took action against Gap and Walmart as part of the “International Day of Action to End Deathtraps.”
Here in New York State, hundreds rallied across the state, urging Gap and Walmart to sign the Bangladesh Accord Fire and Building Safety. Activists held funeral marches, delivered letters to store managers, gathered petition signatures & rallied outside Walmart and Gap stores.
The day of action was held because, in the last eight years, 1,834 garment workers have been killed in factory fires and building collapses in Bangladesh. To prevent more tragedies, activists have called on corporations to sign the Bangladesh Accord. Over sixty global apparel companies have signed it, including five US companies. Yet Gap and Walmart are leading the resistance among many US brands to fight the accord and preserve their right to walk away from workers in danger.
