Egyptians have been demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarek since January 25. The rapidly-formed local group Friends of Egypt displayed banners renaming the Liberty Pole "Liberation Square" after Tahrir (Liberation) Square in Cairo. The demonstration lasted from noon to 6pm with demonstrators working in shifts. There were at least 10 people at the event at all times. In all attendance was estimated at 40 people. Rochester Police kept a close watch from their cars and horses. There were no incidents. Much of the population of Egypt suffers from poverty and high unemployment, especially among young, educated people. Multinational corporations have pushed their interests on countries in the Mideast, hollowing out their economy. Government aid programs have been privatized and cut. The International Monetary Fund is insistent on imposing austerity. Farmers are losing their land. There is a lack of housing. More children are living in poverty. Similar uprisings in Tunisia forced their president Ben Ali to flee to Saudi Arabia in January. This may sound familiar as many Americans are suffering the same hardships while government pushes for austerity. In fact the difference in wealth between the richest and poorest Americans is greater than in Egypt. But the Egyptian people have lost their fear. Unions, quiet for years, called a general strike. This crisis has triggered a new era in politics and economics. Things are different now; we can't keep pretending they are the same. People in the Mideast do not need the US to bring them democracy. The people can do that themselves. They are doing it in Egypt and Tunisia. This is what the we should have done in Iraq. Change does not have to be violent. The atmosphere in Tahrir Square is more like an outdoor festival than a riot. There are tents set up with music, poetry and speeches. The US and Europe face similar issues due to budget cut troubles. There are no solutions within the bounds of global capitalism. It is going to take a revolution to solve. With the Internet, Facebook, Youtube and Twitter it will be the most publicized revolution ever.
