Teach-ins have accompanied a massive free food distribution, free healthcare screenings, and documentation of human rights violations, leading up to the march on the new Constitution Center opening July 4th.
KWRU Director Cheri Honkala said Tuesday, “We want to tell Bush there’s no excuse for poverty in the wealthiest country in the world. We’re demanding our economic human rights to healthcare, affordable housing, food, and a job at a living wage.”
The tent city is being organized by The Kensington Welfare Rights Union, a multi-racial group of poor and homeless families supported by social workers, religious leaders, labor leaders, students, community groups, and housing activists from around the country.
The Kensington Welfare Rights Union says it is taking up the economic issues Martin Luther King Jr. left at the end of his life. Willie Baptist explained by quoting Dr. King, "If a man doesn't have a job or an income, he has neither life, nor liberty, nor the possibility of the pursuit of happiness. He merely exists."
August 2-28 KWRU is Marching through the south with King's vision.
