Fifty-plus people held a rally at Rochester's Liberty Pole and then marched in the rain to City Hall and back in support of the right of same-sex couples to marry. The event was organized by the International Socialist Organization and intended to coincide with the ruling by California's Supreme Court on the validity of that state's Proposition 8, which took away the right to marry from same-sex couples. The California court announced earlier in the day it would uphold Proposition 8, rescinding those rights for Californians. The original plan for the gathering was for a protest if Prop 8 was upheld, but plans were changed at the last minute to hold a march to City Hall. Last Sunday, Mayor Robert Duffy published an essay in support of same-sex marriage rights. Our neighbors in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine have all passed laws allowing same-sex partners to marry, as have Iowa and all of Canada. New York has always been a leader in civil rights. It is the home of Susan B Anthony. It was one of the first states to oppose slavery. The New York State Legislature goes on summer recess in 4 weeks. We have 4 weeks to contact our Senators and tell them to make this happen. <img src="http://rochester.indymedia.org/sites/default/files/migrate_dada/3_file_2.jpg" align="left"> <img src="http://rochester.indymedia.org/sites/default/files/migrate_dada/1_file_4.jpg" align="right"> One of the saddest ironies of our times is that citizens of the very countries we broke away from now enjoy more civil rights than we do in many states. England has a system of civil unions for everyone. Similar laws exist in the rest of Europe, Japan and South Africa. In order to be considered married, a couple is required to appear before a civil official to establish the legal contract. The couple is free to also have a ceremony performed by their chosen religious institution if they so desire, but that ceremony has no power of law. This separates church and state much more so than our current system, where the couple must purchase a marriage license, but the religious ritual is legally binding. This has given conservatives a false but effective argument that churches who disapprove of same-sex unions will be forced to perform them. Mention “civil unions†to some liberals and they bristle at it as being discriminatory. Neither is true. New York has always been a leader in civil rights. It is the home of Susan B Anthony. It was one of the first states to oppose slavery. The New York State Legislature goes on summer recess in 4 weeks. England has a system of civil unions for everyone. Similar laws exist in the rest of Europe, Japan and South Africa. In order to be considered married, a couple is required to appear before a civil official to establish the legal contract. The couple is free to also have a ceremony performed by their chosen religious institution if they so desire, but that ceremony has no power of law. This separates church and state much more so than our current system, where the couple must purchase a marriage license, but the religious ritual is legally binding. This has given conservatives a false but effective argument that churches who disapprove of same-sex unions will be forced to perform them. Mention “civil unions†to some liberals and they bristle at it as being discriminatory. Neither is true.
