August 30, 31, and September 1 Hey there awesome folks in my hometown whom I miss very, very much! Writing to you from an undisclosed cubby in St. Paul at 3:30am on Monday, September 1st. It's been a really intense day and an equally intense week leading up to our trip to the RNC. At the DNC we saw police brutality up close; demonstrators were tear gassed, pepper-sprayed, beat-up, rubber-bulleted, preemptively arrested, detained, intimidated, harassed, heckled, and controlled. While there were a few demonstrators snatched up by police and a couple raids--with over 100 arrests at the Monday anti-capitalist demonstration--it didn't prepare me for pre-RNC police bullshit where after getting in around 4am, I was awaked at 8:00am to the news that 3 houses were being simultaneously raided and cameras were needed at those sites ASAP. Still, I wasn't prepared to then hear that the food not bombs house was raided, that under cover cops were surveilling the bike project and then that the I-Witness Video house had been surrounded by police with assault rifles. The action of jumping from one raid to another to another after hearing about the violent raid on the convergence center the night before and then having to pick up my stuff and leave my crash space because there was a legitimate concern that it may be the next target of a raid, connected me to feelings of anxiety and disconnection. Even as the day went on and things became more crystallized, the raids kept coming; at dinner they raided and impounded an Earth Justice bus. Just a few hours ago, police detained and released a band that was playing for a benefit. Tonight, (September 1st at approximately 2am) ATF and FBI agents were in front of a house on Juliet Ave. where they were checking out a vehicle. Legal observers were on hand as folks in the house video taped police activity. Legal observers were told they could not approach the house where the activists were taping. (no new news on this) And this is 2am on the eve of the RNC protests! One story that hasn't been getting enough coverage is the fact that during the DNC and now the RNC, the authorities have systematically raided and confiscated the materials used in banner production along with made banners and literature that were to be used to get out anti-DNC and RNC messages, The consequences of these raids could easily be seen at the anti-capitalist march on Monday night during the DNC when the demonstrators seemed ineffectual and ill-organized precisely because there was no message due to police interference. However, don’t fret. It’s zero hour here in the twins and folks are amped up and ready to shut it down. Wanna say that with me? SHUT IT DOWN! SHUT IT DOWN! SHUT IT DOWN! I’ve been up late and to bed early and up early and to bed late. I keep telling myself this is like Christmas—although it only happens but once every 4 years. I totally miss all my friends and acquaintances that have helped to build a dynamic and vibrant radical environment in Rochester. It’s an interesting feeling; the desire for grounding and familiarity when one is in a foreign land with new folks. There has been some amazing organizing around this and despite the police state tactics and the media lies, the people here are excited and the message clear: business as usual is at an end. We’re here to tell the republicans and the democrats that we see through your bullshit and we aren’t going to let you sling it at us or anyone else ever again. And when all this is over, we’ll dance in the streets and dream new frameworks to grow our ideas. Your time has come. Like the dinosaurs, your day is through. Time for bed, big day tomorrow. <3 Ted-
