During his Sept. 8 speech before a joint session of Congress promoting the White House jobs program, President Obama called for billions of dollars in spending on infrastructure projects and other government programs to stimulate the creation of jobs in an economy plagued by a 9.1 percent unemployment rate. During the address, Obama also called for congressional passage of three controversial free trade pacts, stating “It’s time to clear the way for a series of trade agreements that would make it easier for American companies to sell their products in Panama, Colombia and South Korea.â€
