U.S. Election 2012- Stewart Alexander: Obama’s Budget is a Plan for Austerity

President Obama’s budget will face an uphill battle in Congress because it fails to reign-in spending and will increase the federal debt by more than $20 billion over the next decade. Republicans in Congress have failed to offer any viable alternatives to the president’s budget proposals, leaving millions of working people discouraged, believing that congressional Republicans are part of the problem rather than offering leadership for solutions.

Labor Candidate Stewart Alexander Criticize Obama’s Budget Plan on Labor

U.S Presidential Candidate Stewart Alexander took aim at President Obama’s 2012 budget proposal with claims that the president’s budget will not create enough good paying jobs and is a roadmap for more national debt and austerity. Alexander is calling for a 50 percent cut in defense spending by 2014 and creating millions of good paying jobs in construction and manufacturing.

This week, the White House proposed a $3.73 trillion spending plan for 2012 that calls for $671 billion for defense spending. In addition to this super-sized portion in the budget, the war in Afghanistan and Iraq will require an addition $150 billion that is not included in the defense budget. Alexander wants $300 billion trimmed from defense spending in the 2012 budget and the immediate withdrawal of all U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan; now totaling 144,000 troops and more than 175,000 contractors.

Contrary to Obama’s plan to spend $50 billion on building roads and bridges, Alexander says Obama’s budget lacks a plan that will create jobs for the 18 million who are unemployed nationwide. Building roads and bridges will require heavy equipment, could require years for planning and will create very few jobs. Alexander has proposed creating jobs in home building, construction and automobile manufacturing to create good paying jobs.

In 2008, while running as a Candidate for Vice President for Socialist Party USA, Alexander said federal assistance was necessary to revive the construction industry and the US economy. At that time, Alexander said it was necessary for Congress to establish a $1 trillion fund to make low interest loans available for home improvements; it was introduced as a nationwide program, designed for local and state governments.

Last November, Alexander said he would support the U.S. government investing as much as $100 billion into electric car manufacturing. Alexander has been a proponent for electric car manufacturing for three decades and says the nation must focus on the future of electric car manufacturing to create jobs.

Alexander says “Creating jobs and cutting wasteful government spending is essential to achieve fiscal responsibility. Obama’s budget fails in both these areas. It appears that the president has offered a safe yet irresponsible budget as he plans for a 2012 run for president.”

Socialist leaders nationwide are charging that Obama’s budget proposals will lead to austerity measures for the nation and working people.

Stewart Alexander recently ran as a candidate for California Governor with the Peace and Freedom Party and is presently seeking the 2012 Presidential Nomination for the Socialists Party USA, the Peace and Freedom Party-California, and the Green Party USA.
