University of Rochester Hosts Exhibit, “From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit†April 9 – 11, 2010 <!--break--> Friday, April 9th through Sunday, April 11th, 2010, the University of Rochester will host an exhibition, “From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spiritâ€, at the Hirst Lounge of Wilson Commons (River Campus), 10:00 am to 8:00 pm daily. This exhibit is free and open to the public. An opening ceremony will be held on Friday April 9th, 2010 at 5:30pm, at the Gowen Room in Wilson Commons, followed by a musical performance by Eastman School of Music students. Opening speakers include Joel Seligman, the President of the University of Rochester, Prof. Robert Holmes (Department of Philosophy, University of Rochester) and Dr. Takao Kato (Soka Gakkai International Representative). Prof. Thomas Warfield (Founder, PeaceArt International) will inaugurate the ceremony. Inspired by the United Nations International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the world (2001-2010), this exhibit not only addresses issues on disarmament of nuclear weapons and human security but also the role that ordinary citizens can play in creating a culture of peace. “Transforming the Human Spirit†is sponsored by the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a worldwide lay Buddhist association and UN recognized Non-Governmental Organization that promotes peace, culture and education, and the Value Creation Club of the University of Rochester. This exhibition has traveled to several prestigious venues, including the Cooper Union NYC, Stanford University, Yale University, the United Nations office at Geneva (Switzerland) and Oslo (Norway) and the United Nations NGO conference in Mexico City.
