Dancehall toaster Buju Banton is most notorious for his 1988 recording "Boom Bye Bye", in which he advocates the shooting and burning of homosexuals. Furthermore, he was charged in 2004 with participating in a homophobic home invasion in his native Kingston, Jamaica where six of the occupants were brutally beaten. The charge was dismissed in 2006 due to purported lack of evidence. Most likely, this was due to the Jamaican court system's unwillingness to prosecute _anyone_ for an anti-gay hate crime, much less an international reggae star.
Shows in Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles have already been cancelled when called upon by LGBTQ activists to do so. A failure to take action will send a message that Rochester is a safe haven for gay-bashing.
Call Water Street Music Hall today at (585) 546-3887 and ask management why they are providing a safe haven for hate crime.
