May Day is an international celebration of the ongoing
struggle for workplace justice. It commemorates past
triumphs, honors those currently committed to
improving the plight of the working class, and fosters
renewed efforts to create a fair and just world for
all. Many nations across the globe honor their workers
by officially recognizing May Day as the holiday for
labor.
Sadly in the United States May Day is treated much
differently. The government, big business, and
corporate media have conspired to taint the image of
May Day with the spectre of anti-Americanism. Through
the creation of Labor Day the United States government
and its cohorts have effectively separated American
labor from the global labor brotherhood. This has
allowed U.S. based businesses to farm production out
to third world countries where workers are poorly
paid, have few rights and no means to redress
grievances while these very same companies slowly
erode job security, circumvent minimum wage and
maximum hour laws, and destroy small businesses back
home.
May Day Buffalo has called for a May Day weekend
convergence in the city because there is a real need
for labor, progressives and radicals to realize that
their fight is one and the same. This weekend is aimed
at bringing like-minded people together to begin
building for a better tomorrow. To honor the past,
present, and future individuals who fight to improve
the lot of the many May Day Buffalo has set several
events for May 2nd- May 4th. The highlight of the
weekend convergence will be a protest action against
Wal-Mart held on Saturday, May 3 at 2pm, 5033 Transit
Road. This action is part of a nationally coordinated
campaign designed to draw attention to Wal-Mart’s
continued exploitation of workers in this country and
abroad.
Full information about events, supporting
organizations, and the politics and history behind May
Day will be available at the Access Storefront
Project, 3180 Main St. throughout the weekend. May Day
