Discussion by Cheryl Wertz, Executive Director of Peace Action of New York State (PANYS) <!--break--> Tuesday, August 4, 2009, 7:00 – 9:00 PM Gilbert Hall, First Unitarian Church, 220 S. Winton Rd, Rochester FREE and open to the public. These are exciting times for nuclear abolition activists. President Obama has not only made his commitment to nuclear abolition clear, but has even acknowledged the particular responsibility that the United States has to lead the charge. But given the other priorities of government and Obama's comment that it cannot be accomplished in our lifetime, how do we get from sentiment to reality? On August 4th, Cheryl will be updating the Rochester community on the success of the May 2009 NPT Prep Com and plans for a major event in New York City in May 2010, during the NPT Review. What grassroots actions can really make a difference and how can we make our voices heard? Cheryl Wertz is the Executive Director of Peace Action of New York State (PANYS), the New York affiliate of Peace Action, the largest grassroots peace organization in the country. With more than 3,000 activists in 18 grassroots chapters, members of Peace Action New York State promote the non-violent resolution of conflict, the abolition of nuclear weapons, building a human rights culture and supporting human needs instead of militarism. PANYS produces educational materials, does community organizing and public outreach.
