For the last month BWT has been offering advance tickets for THE LAST SUNDAY IN JUNE by Jonathan Tolins at half price. ABOUT THE PLAY:
First appearing as part of this year’s Rainbow Theater Festival, Jonathan Tolins’ THE LAST SUNDAY IN JUNE is a bold work that warmly embraces the customs and cultures of the “gay play” while at the same time turning those ideas on its head. The story itself follows a group of friends who meet in a Greenwich Village apartment for the annual pride parade, which takes place on the last Sunday in June. The main focus is on the largely platonic relationships of Tom and Michael, a couple in a slump about to move from the village to the suburbs and James and Susan, a gay man and a straight woman who decide to ‘opt out’ of their former failed relationships through a legal marriage to each other. Through humor and comedic turns the play attempts to re-define gay relationships by posing a series of questions. Can gay culture exist in the suburbs away from bars and parades? Can a partnership exist without sex? What defines a marriage?

For all the witty banter, Tolins is interested in taking the pulse of gay men in the wake of mainstream acceptance. Is some attitude adjustment in order when homosexuality has gone from the closet to must-see TV? Should they assimilate into the middle class by marrying and moving to the suburbs or maintain a more bohemian, less monogamous lifestyle in their own enclaves? Mr. Tolins is known for using comedy to address important cultural issues through his contributions as a producer and writer for Queer as Folk and his play Twilight of the Golds, which performed on Broadway.

The cast includes: Brian M. Kehoe (Tom), Derrik Frenney (Michael), Edmond Toub (Brad), Erik Oehler (Joe), Marisa Krupa (Susan), and Nathaniel Dudley (James/Scott). All actors were part of the original Rainbow Theater Festival cast.

THE LAST SUNDAY IN JUNE by Jonathan Tolins will be presented at 243 Rosedale St. (New Life Presbyterian Church at the corner of Monroe Ave. and Rosedale St.) beginning July 17th and running through July 19th.
