Activists confront Democratic delegates on Health Care

Delegates to the Rochester Democratic Convention, held at the Unite Here hall, were greeted by other Democratic supporters of HR 676, a bill in Congress calling for universal single-payer health care. 

The bill would extend the currently successful Medicare program to all citizens.  Local Rep Eric Massa is the only local Congressperson to have signed onto the bill.  Reps Dan Maffei and Louise Slaughter as well as Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand have not yet signed onto the bill.  HR 676 sponsored by Rep John Conyers (D-MI) and a similar bill in the Senate S 703 sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) would provide:
  • Patients may go to any doctor or hospital of their choice
  • Coverage for medical, dental, prescription drugs and mental health care
  • Fully funded community health centers to treat 60 million people in under served areas
  • To address the shortage of primary care physicians and dentists by providing the National Health Service resources to train an additional 24,000 health care professionals
There are differences between the two bills.  The Senate version would be administered by individual States while the House version would be run by the Federal government.  But the goals are the same, make health care the right of all citizens as it is in every other industrialized country and many others.  Rep Slaughter says that she is hesitating on supporting the bill because she hasn't heard from her constituents on it.  So let's make sure she hears from us!
