Iowa Supreme Court Legalizes Same Sex Marraige
Primary tabs
In an unanimous decision, the Iowa Supreme Court upheld a lower court's ruling that found a state law restricting marriage to between a man and woman violated Iowa's constitution. This makes Iowa the third state that same sex couples will be able to legally marry.
The Supreme court in their written decision stated, "We are firmly convinced the exclusion of gay and lesbian people from the institution of civil marriage does not substantially further any important governmental objective,", and that "The Legislature has excluded a historically disfavored class of persons from a supremely important civil institution without a constitutionally sufficient justification."
It will take a few weeks for the ruling to take effect, in which time anti civil rights proponents can file a petition for a rehearing.
Just for today, it is a victory for civil rights. Yahoo!!!!
