An Elderly Palestinian Couple was Evicted from Their Home

Jonothan cook of the national wrote about Mohammed and Fawziya Khurd, an elderly Palestinian couple that were evicted from their homes in the middle of the night in East Jerusalem by Israeli police. The police were enforcing an eviction order issued by the Israeli high court. The couple is currently living on the street in a tent. The couple had been living there since the mid 1950's when the area was under the Jordanian control and they were granted permission to live there. They had been expelled from from their homes in 1948 by Zionist military forces. The members of the Zionist leadership that had the most influence over the military wanted a state that if not exclusively Jewish was overwhelmingly Jewish. The Jewish settlers have been trying to claim their home since Israel took control of the area during the 1967 war. In 1999 settlers were able to seize a wing of the house belonging to their son. The Israeli high court ruled in favor of the Khurd family. Unlike the eviction order that was carried out against Mohammed Khurd and his wife the eviction order against the Jewish settlers was not carried out. Incredibly enough, diplomats from such countries as the United States and Britain tried to petition the Israeli government to to intervenes on the couples behalf. They were worried this will encourage the settlers in their goal to expel over 500 hundred Palestinians from their homes so they can build 200 apartments for Jewish families in their place.
