Anarchist Against the Wall Needs Help
Primary tabs
Anarchist Against the Wall (AATW) is a direct action group that was formed by mostly Anarchist Israeli Activist who were already engaged in resistance activities against the Israeli occupation. They formed this group during the initial demonstrations against the separation wall that Israel is building through Palestinian land. This group conducts joint non violent actions with Palestinians against the occupation in general but is most focused on the separation wall. This group coordinates with the popular committees of the villages effected. In the video clips of these demonstrations I have seen the young protester hurl pebbles or rocks at the armed Israeli soldiers they encounter. The Israeli army is very violent to Palestinians in the occupied territory. Given this reality it is not surprising that some of the younger demonstrators hurl something. The Israeli army also was tear gassing the demonstrators and firing their rifles. However, most demonstrators chanted and did not hurl anything.
It is very important for Israelis to be present during demonstrations against the wall. The code of conduct for the Israeli army is significantly different when Israelis are present. Severe Violence is still used against people resisting, but the violence is significantly less severe when Israelis are present. Many Israelis have been wounded, some seriously. Palestinians demonstrators are still the most targeted, with 10 having died and thousands having been wounded.
Anarchist Against the Wall (AATW) has helped to win some victories. In 2004 the wall was going to be built through the village of Budrus. Through community organizing, popular resistance and the assistance of AATW the villagers were able to push the path of the wall almost completely off their land. Currently, most of the activities are centered around Bil'in where the wall threaten to separate Palestinians villagers from most of their agricultural land.
The Israeli government has tried hard to end the popular resistance struggle and prevent Israelis from joining it through many repressive measures. Under the laws of occupation people can be indicted for just participating in demonstrations In the last 5 years AATW protesters have been arrested hundred of times and dozens of indictment have been filled against them.
To keep activist out of jail so they can continue to support Palestinians struggling for freedom, they need funding. The cost for legal representation is already at 60,000 dollars and keeps on rising. .
