Modeling their efforts on their successful nine-day walk in May through rural communities from Rochester to Fort Drum, citizens against the war in Iraq will take to the streets of Rochester’s urban neighborhoods this summer to talk with residents about the war and its economic impact here at home. The first of four day-long walks is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, beginning at the Storefront Anti-War Crisis Center ( 658 Monroe Avenue ) at 1:30 p.m., and concluding with a light supper and community gathering at Downtown United Presbyterian Church ( 121 North Fitzhugh Street ) from 5 to 7 p.m.
The public is encouraged to participate. Rides will be provided for walkers unable to complete the full three-hour route.
According to volunteer coordinator Mary Adams, the Saturday walks will “link across neighborhoods and issues to work for real change from the bottom up. We have found overwhelming concern about the ongoing war in Iraq . People urgently want to share their stories, their thoughts about the current state of our country, and their ideas for change. We hope to learn more about what’s going on and how we can strengthen our mutual efforts.â€
Participating in the walks, and in the evening programs, will be members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out, Rochester Against War, Declaration of Peace, and other local groups and churches concerned with the well-being of our community.
