Israeli Attack on Palestinian Charity

By Daniel On March 30, 2008 Gideon Levy reported on a targeted campaign against the Islamic Charity Movement. As usual the Israeli government used the pretext of war on terror to justify the seizure of food and clothing from warehouses in Hebron. These goods were going to go to a Palestinian orphanage set up by the Islamic Charity Movement. The children in the orphanage are limited to rice and lentils with yogurt for lunch. They had a larger variety of food but it was taken away. There was also a school built for Palestinian children that had capacity for 1,200 students. The gates to this school were welded shut by the Israeli Defence Forces. The Islamic Charity Movement was established in 1962 before Hamas was formed. It is responsible for a network of organizations that provide educational and other types of assistance to Palestinians that have been orphaned or come from poverty. Seven thousand orphans are cared for by this charitable network. The Islamic Charity Movement has set up a boarding school which 350 Palestinian students attend and 3 city school where 12,000 student attend. It provides for another six students in outlying towns. The Islamic Charity Movement employs 550 people and has hundreds of volunteers. Abd al-Karim Farah who is the legal advisor to the charity says everything is supervised by an accountant and the Palestinian Authority's welfare and education ministries. The curricula taught in the school are identical to those of the Palestinian Authority. Remember, the Palestinian Authority are the moderates. This is the group that the U.S. Government and the Israeli Government wanted the Palestinians to elect. The money to run the Islamic Charity movement comes from Arab and Europeans as well as U.S. Agencies. It also has a number of independent donors.
