Dear Senator Clinton:
We are citizens who are marching with the New York State Marches for Peace in support of the Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW).
It is our obligation as citizens and yours as a duly sworn US senator to uphold the US Constitution and insure our soldiers are never forced to fight an illegal war.
When President Bush in his capacity as commander-in-chief ordered US soldiers to invade Iraq he specifically violated the UN Charter, a duly signed treaty, and the US Constitution, in full light of day before the world. Under Article Six, Section Two, all treaties become the supreme law of the land. Therefore, under our Constitution today, the Congress and President do not have the legal authority to invade another nation without UN approval, any more than they have the power to reinstate human enslavement or keep women from voting.
Therefore, we call on you to heed the call of the Iraq Veterans Against the War, whose mission reflects the opinion of over 75 % of US citizens and the majority of US soldiers in Iraq to end the war and occupation. Specifically the IVAW calls for: immediate withdrawal of occupying troops in Iraq; reparation for Iraqis; the ending of the corporate pillaging of Iraq; and full benefits and services to those veterans who have served our country.
We ask you specifically to shift the funding from supporting the war and occupation to reparations for Iraq and full veteran benefits.
Funding the war is killing our troops and destroying families and thousands of Iraqi civilians. We demand you vote to shift the funding from supporting the war to truly supporting our veterans by bringing them home and paying for all the services they have earned.
Sincerely,
NYS Marches for Peace
