Making Connections between Domestic Violence and School Bullying: How Our
Children Are Being Affected and What Our Schools Are Doing About It
Monday, October 15, 2007
7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
at
Nazareth College
Golisano Academic Center
Room 375
Pittsford, NY
Join us as we explore the effects of domestic violence on children,
highlighting their potentially increased involvement in bullying activities
at school, either as bullies, victims, or bully-victims. We will consider
the similar characteristics of abusive adults and child bullies, making a
case for the importance of addressing bullying in our schools as a means of
domestic violence prevention and awareness. Pertinent actions of local
school districts, related to this topic, will be incorporated into the
presentation.
Fairport resident Katy Allen, owner of Impact Training, Inc. (
www.impacttraining. com), and AAUW Fairport Area Branch member Jennifer King,
a survivor of domestic violence, will present this program. Both were
English teachers and are currently PHD candidates at the Warner Graduate
School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester.
This presentation is a result of their collaborative doctoral studies and
common concerns.
Please come and bring a friend for a very informative evening.
This event is sponsored by AAUW (American Academy of University Women).

The real sin against life is to abuse and destroy beauty, even one's
own—even more, one's own, for that has been put in our care and we are
responsible for its well-being.
By Katherine Anne Porter
Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments in life are not
the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, not
the great goals achieved. The real milestones are less prepossessing. They
come to the door of memory unannounced, stray dogs that amble in, sniff
around a bit and simply never leave. Our lives are measured by these."
