Voluntary family planning
Primary tabs
On February 25, 2006 world population reached 6.5 billion.
By, 2050, our human numbers are estimated to reach 9.1 billion, but they could rise as high as 12 billion people.
Some 99 percent of this population growth will take place in developing countries, those least able to bear the pressure of rapid population growth.
In 2005, Congress and the Administration approved $469.6 million for voluntary international family planning.
In 2006, the President sought to reduce that amount by nearly 19 percent.
Only if women gain affordable access to comprehensive voluntary family planning resources can they control their fertility and improve their own lives and the lives of their families and the communities.
Today, 201 million women worldwide lack access to effective contraceptives and one woman dies every minute from complications related to pregnancy or child birth. Maternal injury and the death could be reduced by 20 percent if family planning services were made available to all women.
The Population Institute believes international voluntary family planning accounts should be funded at $815 million, equal to the 1995 high water mark of $542 million when adjusted for inflation and the increase in the number of people of reproductive age. The Population Institute also seeks a $50 million U.S. contribution to UNFPA to support effective and comprehensive family planning and reproductive health programs.
