Protest rally Tuesday July 10th
***Stop the raids and deportations of immigrant workers
***No to racial profiling
Protest picket: Tuesday, 5:00 pm, County Sheriff's offices (130 S
Plymouth)
March to County Legislature: 5:30 pm (29 W Main St)
According to a report by the Democrat and Chronicle, "Monroe County sheriff's deputies said someone spotted the men allegedly loading material into a van in a parking lot by the work site and contacted authorities."
While none of the twelve men spoke English, this is not illegal. Neither is working at a construction site. Nonetheless the sheriff's deputies and Border Patrol agents arrested the men and turned them over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
RAIR believes that local law enforcement agents, including sheriff's deputies, should not put themselves in the role of immigration police. People in Rochester and its surrounding towns should not be subject to racial profiling and harassment, regardless of the language they speak or of their immigration status.
This incident is merely the latest of dozens that happen every day in our area, where people with brown skin are stopped in stores, in bus stations, or on the street. And if they fail to produce the right documents, they face immediate arrest and eventual deportation.
