*Cards, Letters and Prayers* *Video of Ron Ring, local political and peace advocate * * * On Saturday, June 16 at 7 pm at the First Unitarian Church at 220 Winton Road South in Rochester, there will be a showing of a 24-minute documentary about Ron Ring. Ron is a 62 year-old political and peace advocate and is often seen around Rochester holding a cardboard sign and saying to people, “Cards, letters and prayers.” Director David Schwittek will be present to introduce this video. He has captured Ron’s spirit as he traces Ron from his roots as a gifted architecture student in Rochester to his struggles with the rigors of poverty and the symptoms of schizoaffective disorder, a form of mental illness. David has footage of Ron’s political activities during the 60s and 70s, and his recent return to school and politics. The story behind this film takes place in Rochester. When David was still in high school, he met Ron at a copy store. After class one day, David was approached by Ron who was copying his 600-page manifesto. Ron regaled him with tidbits about the nuclear freeze and arms control. At that time, David regarded Ron with a measure of fascination. It was this fascination that remained with David for years after and eventually compelled him to make this film. The video includes numerous interviews with people who have known Ron and concludes with his wedding to his lovely wife, Nancy, in July 2006. You are encouraged to attend. There is no charge to attend this event. This film received a certificate of merit at the 49th Annual Rochester International Film Festival held in May, 2007 at the Dryden Theatre
