I heard on a progressive tv show possibly Democracy Now the the Bush administration had developed a plan to destabilize the Iranian economy and replace its leadership. Bush cannot get the nod from congress or the senate to attack militarily so he may be going for the tried and true CIA covert method. What are the driving forces behind this need to replace his government Most motives I think are understood by the activist community. But one motive is often overlooked. This is the one driven by our blind support of the Israeli government and all who defend it. Many supporters of the Israeli government wanted the U.S. to attack Iraq. I believe the Israeli government also wanted the U.S. to attack Iraq. It turns out Saddam was supporting the Palestinian Liberation Front which Israel was fighting against. This was a Palestinian group that historically used violence to resist the brutal Israeli occupation. It morphed into Fateh which is the most recent incarnation. Some supporters of the Israeli government even linked the opposition to the war with anti-antisemitism. I believe these supporters and the Israeli government want us to either attack Iran or replace its government. It is widely reported that Iran supports Hamas which is a Palestinian group that uses violence to resist a brutal Israeli occupation. To be fair to Iran the Israeli government also sponsors an extremist group that launches attack in Iran. Earlier this year the democrats were going to take a stand against an invasion of Iran to score points with all those people disgruntled with the invasion of Iraq. They were going to push for legislation that prevented Bush from attacking Iran. Because they did not want to seem unsympathetic to Israeli security interest they backed out of pushing for the legislation. In the Israeli media I have heard fear is being whipped up over Iran. The Iranian government does not want a war with Israel. Even the most reactionary people in the government realize the military superiority of Israel. Iran also has a thriving Jewish population that considers themselves Persians foremost and are very loyal to Iran. But, some or all the people in the Iranian government are very fearful of Israel because of its military superiority and its historical aggressiveness towards its neighbors.
